Characters: Link, Navi, Epona
Spoilers: ...none, I think?
Disclaimer: I do not own The Legend of Zelda or any related characters. This was written out of enjoyment of the series, and no profit is being made.
Notes: Written for higenshi to celebrate 40+ watchers. I have always wanted to write something like this, haha.
Navi’s fingers feel like pine needles that don’t prick on his skin; like the puffs of dandelion seeds with more weight. They pull strands of his hair away from his forehead, caked there with sweat and dirt and luckily no blood.
Link sighs heavily as he leans back against Epona’s side. The saddle blankets, still warm from her back, lie over his legs. The horse turns her neck to nudge at this shoulder, and the young man (Navi has to remind herself that he isn’t the boy who will save Hyrule anymore) laughs tiredly, placing his open palm on her velvety nose.
“It’s been a long day for all of us,” Navi chimes, the light breeze from her wings tousling his bangs. “We should get some rest.”
Link nods, smiling, as the sun sets over Gerudo Valley and orange touches the tip of every blade of grass in Hyrule Field. Seven years ago, he would never have given a thought to falling asleep atop the hill near Lon Lon Ranch. The Stalchildren and their burning eyes still haunted his dreams some nights.
But seven years was a long time, and the bones of the dead rested beneath the soil.
Link offered Epona a bag of Deku Nuts he had softened over a fire two nights ago, and as his steed rested and his fairy took to snoozing in his cap, he was grateful for that small blessing in a world gone wrong.
